Resources to help
you manage your
workforce during
the Pandemic Flu
While sitting at home this month dealing with H1N1 in my own personal life I came to
reflect on how important knowledge is when dealing with something so serious. Being a
professional who reads about this pandemic flu almost every day in my job, I was reassured
by my knowledge that the best thing for my family to do is wait this thing out perhaps easier
said than done. The media have done a wonderful job telling everyone about the H1N1
virus but have they really educated the public about the prevention of the spread of the virus
and the cold hard facts. Not necessarily, when I see parents allowing their children to play
in football games when they clearly have all the symptoms of the flu or when they come to
work to finish up that project that is due. I do not think that we, as safety & health professionals, have done our job in educating people to do the right thing.
I am not going to try and rewrite the book on flu prevention but I will give you several
resources to help you get the word out about a good, common sense approach to the H1N1
flu season. I encourage you to share your knowledge with your co-workers, family and
friends. You may be surprised by what people do not know about the flu, including the differences between the normal seasonal flu and this H1N1 pandemic flu.
Circle 52 on Card
I encourage you to take a look at the resources listed below. They are free and have wonderful posters and handouts for you to distribute to your workforce. View our list of prevention
products on page 12. Remember that a few minutes of prevention may save your company
weeks of sick days. Remember no one ever tells you what they do not know. Common
sense really does play a big part in most occupational accidents. Education and awareness is
our greatest tool in containing this pandemic flu.
OSHA has developed a Website that will only take a few minutes to get a wealth of lit-
erature for your reference: http://www.osha.gov/h1n1/index.html
