A gas detector is monitoring air pollution in a Midwest gasket plant, flashing an alarm the instant oxygen levels fall below a preset point.
The company turns out a wide range of rub- ber plugs, gaskets, disc, cups, balls and accor- dion-shaped sleeves for pressure-testing water, air, gas and sewage lines.
Raw rubber sheets are sliced, cut, molded and glued, then baked in a nitrogen-charged auto- clave. About the size of an over-the-road semitrailer, the autoclave vulcanizes the rub- ber products under elevated temperatures and pressures.
High nitrogen levels in the autoclave drive out oxygen and other gases which could cause leaks, fractures or soft spots in the fin- ished rubber product.

A problem facing the company was possible nitrogen leaks in the autoclave room. Stored in huge reinforced cylinders outside the facto- ry, high pressure nitrogen is piped into the autoclave. Because of the pressure extremes, any leaks in the pipes, valves, pressure reduc- er or fittings could quickly drench the entire area with nitrogen, depleting oxygen levels in the autoclave room and the entire factory, meaning catastrophic danger for anyone in the plant.
The Solution is gas detectors from Minneapolis-based Sensor Electronics, that continually monitor the air in the autoclave room, flashing an alarm the instant oxygen levels fall below 18 per cent.
The detector automatically compensates for varying temperature, pressure and humidity, giving continuing protection despite changing operating conditions. It also ignores ambient dust, dirt, oil mist and aerosols.
The detector is linked to a remote transmitter that shows real-time O2 levels on a digital panel. Readouts are updated every 5 seconds.
In addition, the LEDs on the transmitter glow green so long as autoclave room oxygen lev- els are about 18 per cent. If they drop, the LEDs change to amber, then red if O2 levels become critical. The transmitter can also turn on alarm lights and horns to warn personnel.
Gas detectors from Minneapolis-based Sensor Electronics warn if oxygen levels drop too low in a Midwest gasket factory, where leaks from a high-pres sure vulcanizing autoclave could quickly flood the plant with suffocating nitrogen. The transmitter updates O2 digital display every second; LED’s flash green/amber/red if oxygen levels drop to danger point.
